Little Shop of Horrors/Skid Row, Entryway Decor
I was asked to dress an entrance hallway for Olympus High School's Musical Production of Little Shop of Horrors and transform it into Skid Row!
I was given about 1 week to get into the space after school hours, to get to this completion point. After much contemplation, I decided that black paper would be best approach for this installation. I used pastel chalk to get most of the color on the walls. This way I avoided paint messes and I didn't have to wait for things to dry.
The idea was to emulate the look and feel of Skid Row based on the story of Little Shop of Horrors. I wanted to nod to the film with some of the treatments that were added. There is a laundry and apartment building (with a fire escape platform) on the left, and Audrey's apartment (inspired by the film) on the right. I designed some signage, decked out a bus bench, made a sewer cover, and even made some newspaper articles to hand out with the cute stuffed rats scattered around. I was especially proud of my homemade fire hydrant!
Some of the students were asked to dress up in character and ask for "spare change" to add to their drama department funds so this was a great place for them to hang out while guests were arriving for the shows.
I even made a fun little projection with some vector animations that I created, along with some silhouette shots from the movie. This projection was played, along with ambient sound effects, in a loop off to the side.
I couldn't have done this project without my favorite person, Kimberly. She and her kids helped with so much and Kimberly's creativity was so incredible. She came up so many ideas including the shopping cart covered in lights and the garbage can fire (lights). It was quick and dirty but overall I was very pleased with the results!
